Bosque School/Cibola HS win Second Annual NM Envirothon
By Dan Ware
For the second year in a row a team of students from the Bosque School and Cibola High School in Albuquerque has won the Annual New Mexico Envirothon competition, held recently at the Bonita Park Nazarene Church Camp near Ruidoso, NM.
The students have won a chance to compete against other teams from around the United States and Canada at the upcoming national competition to be held in North Carolina.
Four teams, representing the Bosque School, Cibola High School, Taos, Tatum and Truth or Consequences met on April 24th and 25th to compete in five natural resource categories including: soils, aquatics, forestry, wildlife and the current environmental topic, Biodiversity in a Changing World. The students worked to answer natural resource questions and develop solutions to environmental problems.

The New Mexico Envirothon consists of two components including a series of in-field investigations and testing, which includes multiple choice, true/false,

and short answer questions in each of the five subject areas. An oral presentation component presents students with real-world resource problem. They must develop a management strategy to address the problem and present their solution to a panel of judges.
The winning team, dubbed "The Vectors" includes: Kelley Dickey from Cibola High School and David Goodrich, Tristan Wright, Aaron Gjullin, and Sam Machenzie from the Bosque School. They will now begin preparing for the national competition in Asheville, NC sponsored by Canon. The event will take place at the University of North Carolina-Asheville, August 2-9, 2009.
